Transferring files to midcoast.com with Fetch

This document attempts to illustrate how a person would transfer files from their MAC to our server, in much the same manner as you'd use to place web pages on our server.

FTP stands for file transfer protocol - a way for computers to send files to each other over the internet. This is the most common way to get web pages and pictuers from your workstation at home to our server where the web pages will be stored.

First this we want to do is make a connection from your computer to midcoast.com. In the host field, put in midcoast.com, userID is the username you wrote in the 8-character field on your registration form. This will be all lowercase. Type in your password where your password should go. The user "timewind" did not, as he did not want the whole web to see his password, but you would. in directory, type in the directory you want to end up in on the server. in timewind's case, it is /home/timewind/public_html, in jp's case, it would be /home/jp/public_html . This too is in all lowercase. CaSe Is VeRy ImPoRtAnT. Press OK, and Fetch will connect you.

The screen below shows the files on the server in timewind's public_html folder (/home/timewind/public_html/). We will place the files in the public_html folder to keep them seperate from other files in your account which you may want to keep private, as web files are readable by all.

You want to name the main homepage as index.html because that's what will be automatically loaded when someone visit's http://www.midcoast.com/~timewind in netscape or another browser.

Make sure the settings are set as below, like that you are in the public_html folder anf the automatic button is checked. Now click on "Put file".


Now choose the file on your macintosh that you want to upload. This is like "open" in a typical macintosh piece of software.


Below, index.html is the file you want to save the file as on the server.


This is one example of how to upload a file. In making a web page you might also have image files and other html documents. Remember, case sensitive and no spaces. You can have long file names though.
